Temporary by design
Every effect lives in DeskPlay's own temporary layer. Tools can leave crumbs, confetti, bubbles, ribbons, paint, stamps, and tiny critters behind without touching your real desktop.
DeskPlay is the gentler sibling of DeskSmash, built for the Mac App Store while keeping the same instant-fun.
Requires macOS 15.0 or later. Supports Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
Built with Swift, AppKit, Metal, and SpriteKit, plus positional audio and trackpad haptics.
What is DeskPlay?
DeskPlay keeps the core delight, then softens the chaos to fit Mac App Store guidelines while still feeling tactile and fun.
Every effect lives in DeskPlay's own temporary layer. Tools can leave crumbs, confetti, bubbles, ribbons, paint, stamps, and tiny critters behind without touching your real desktop.
DeskPlay is not a screen recorder, wallpaper trick, or fake desktop. It runs as a native transparent overlay above your workspace, while your real files, windows, and desktop stay untouched underneath.
The tools quietly interact: confetti drifts and settles, biscuit crumbs slide across the surface, critters search for crumbs or confetti, and the Leafblower pushes the whole scene around.
Tools with tiny personalities
Crack open a biscuit and scatter crumbs across the desktop. Crumbs stay on the surface, where they can be blown around with the Leafblower, wiped away with the Cleaning Cloth, or discovered by hungry ants.
Spray colorful confetti across the screen in a wide burst. Settled confetti can attract termites, while the Leafblower can sweep it toward the edges when things get crowded.
Add tiny ants or termites to your desktop. Ants seek out biscuit crumbs and carry them away, while termites recycle settled confetti.
Juggle a ball with your mouse. Simple idea, surprisingly addictive. On macOS 26 and later, the ball uses a native Liquid Glass texture with beautiful light refractions.
Push desktop mess around with a directional gust of air. The Leafblower lifts and sweeps confetti, and slides biscuit crumbs across the surface.
Spray bubbles and water droplets across the desktop. Adjust the mix for a watery or soapy feel: watery settings create more small droplets, while soapy settings create larger, longer-lasting bubbles.
Native Mac. All the way down.
Built with SwiftUI and AppKit, DeskPlay uses real macOS windows and system-native controls rather than a web-style fullscreen illusion. On macOS 26 and later, it leans into the newer Liquid Glass look where it makes sense, so the toolbar, controls, and Juggle Ball feel at home on modern macOS.
Metal keeps the overlay smooth and display-synced, including high-refresh motion on ProMotion Macs. Core Graphics handles composited surface effects like paint, stamps, and cleaned areas.
SpriteKit powers live particles such as confetti, bubbles, and animated effects, while a custom Swift simulation engine lets tools react to each other instead of behaving like isolated stickers.
AVFoundation supports spatial audio on compatible devices and headphones, placing sounds where interactions happen on screen. Supported Mac trackpads add subtle native haptics to certain actions.
The result is a desktop toy with a real macOS engine underneath: native windows, ProMotion-friendly rendering, pointer-aware physics, positional sound, tactile feedback, and a modern Mac interface.
